Fishing & Aquaculture

The principal fisheries in the Region focus on finfish, particularly the high value emperors, snappers and cods. The Region has a number of limited-entry trawl fisheries for prawns. There are also significant fisheries for Spanish mackerel, barramundi, threadfin salmon and shark.

The aquaculture industry in the Kimberley is dominated by pearling and barramundi farms.

The Kimberley’s fishing industry was valued at $7 million in 2011-12, following an increase in fish caught from the previous two years. The graph below illustrates the estimated value of fishing catch by type between 2001 and 2011.

For more information on the Status of the current fishing and aquaculture industries in the Kimberley and Western Australia please see the latest West Australian Department of Fisheries Status Report.
