Australia’s Global Energy Ventures (GEV) and Pacific Hydro Australia Developments have executed a four-year memorandum of understanding to explore opportunities regarding the production, storage, loading, ground and marine transportation of green hydrogen produced by Pacific Hydro’s Ord Hydrogen Project.
The Ord Hydrogen Project, located at Lake Argyle, Western Australia, is expected to supply 30MW of renewable power to the local market and has potential to supply green hydrogen to Asian markets. Following the completion of a State Government funded feasibility study that investigated the potential to build a renewable hydrogen plant near Kununurra, using renewable energy generated by the Ord River Hydro Power Plant, Pacific Hydro is now progressing to the next stage of investigating whether the project is commercially feasible.
The joint venture partners will work collaboratively on developing an export market and associated marine transport solution for green hydrogen utilising GEV’s proprietary C-H2 ship and supply chain.
Planning and environmental studies were carried out in 2021 to inform approvals for the project. These studies investigated the potential impacts on flora and fauna, cultural heritage, landscape and visual, noise, traffic, safety and hydrology.
If the project proceeds it will deliver employment opportunities during construction and help to grow the local economy and could put Kununurra and the East Kimberley at the forefront of Australia’s transition towards a hydrogen economy.
Pacific Hydro remains committed to providing a reliable source of electricity to the people of Kununurra and surrounding communities from The Ord River Hydro Power Plant. Conversations with key stakeholders, traditional owners (Miriuwung Gajerrong) and the broader community will be ongoing throughout 2022
