Latest Kimberley Shire housing snapshots

As part of the Commission’s continued advocacy for increased housing provision across the Kimberley, we intend to provide regular up to date snapshots of the ‘state of the sector’.

Housing supply continues to present economic barrier in the region

Housing is, of course, fundamental to the functioning of any economy, and to the wellbeing of families and communities. The development of housing is a major economic opportunity for our region, and a source of employment for many workers and businesses. Reporting on the state of housing in our region is therefore within the Commission’s statutory mandate to “identify investment opportunities in the region” and to “provide information and advice to promote business development”, as well as to “seek to ensure that the general standard of government services and access to those services in the region is comparable to that which applies in the metropolitan area.”

These latest snapshots present data from the the second half of FY23/24 and highlight the continued dysfunction of housing markets across the region. Over recent years, the number of building approvals across Kimberley Shires has decreased, resulting in housing shortages across the region. Where private rental markets exist, rental vacancy rates are practically 0%, which has resulted in continually elevated median rental prices.

The Commission continues to work with Kimberley Shires to plan and undertake strategic advocacy for investment and development to increase housing supply across our region.
