Western Australia’s newest regional airline Nexus Airlines took to the skies for the first time on Monday 10th July on the new Geraldton-Karratha-Port Hedland-Broome route. This is an important milestone for regional WA, increasing accessibility and transportation throughout the Kimberley region with scheduled flights.
One of the significant advantages of Nexus Airlines is its commitment to providing enhanced accessibility to the Kimberley region. Previously, residents and visitors would have to travel south to Perth to get from one regional area to another. Now, with Nexus Airlines’ routes, there are more networks that fly directly between regional towns.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the scheduled service would boost tourism and business in regional WA.
“Today’s first flight on the expanded Inter-Regional Flight Network by Nexus Airlines marks a historic moment for aviation services in WA,” Ms Saffioti said.
The State government has promised an investment of $4.05 million over the next four years to support this new link between Geraldton and Karratha. This will allow Nexus Airlines to invest in a higher capacity 76-seat aircraft, which in turn will reduce airfares and increase overall passenger experience on the aircraft.
Nexus Airlines has an exclusive agreement with the WA Government to operate the Inter-Regional Flight Network (IRFN) until June 2027. This agreement outlines the requirements to operate the route, including providing appropriate service levels and fares.
Thanks to the support of the WA Government, Nexus Airlines’ Geraldton-Perth flights will commence 17 July, with Geraldton residents able to access capped airfares on the route through the State Government’s Regional Airfare Zone Cap scheme.
Overall, Nexus Airlines will greatly benefit regional areas in WA, improving the connectivity between the MidWest and the Pilbara. This is expected to increase tourism to the areas, offer easier transport between regions amongst residents, increase new business opportunities and provide essential links for the movement of goods and services.
