Yawuru Home Ownership Project

In April 2015, Nyamba Buru Yawuru and the Kimberley Development Commission launched the Yawuru Home Ownership Project (Y.H.O.P.) in a partnership with Keystart to provide shared equity home ownership opportunities for Yawuru people.

Successful applicants were drawn via a ballot system and later that year began their journey to home ownership. The video below shows one of the project success stories (captions and transcript available).

00:02
I’ve been a month since I was 15 so
00:04
that’s life for me that’s all I know
00:07
I’ve always wanted to have my own home
00:10
but it just seemed like it was
00:13
impossible I wanted the kids to have
00:15
something a place that was ours I didn’t
00:18
belong to somebody else and then the
00:20
project came about and it was a way to
00:23
get into homeownership I think for a lot
00:27
of Aboriginal people homeownership has
00:30
never really been an option but now I
00:33
see a lot of young indigenous people
00:35
going into homeownership and it’s a
00:37
sense of pride it’s pretty daunting it’s
00:40
pretty scary but it’s it’s exciting as
00:43
well it’s concrete and it’s there and
00:46
it’s yours and it’s home
